Each of My Facebook Friends

Materials: India Ink on Paper

Dimensions: 7'x7'

Considering technology, erasure, representation, intimacy, and movement, I wanted to memorialize each friend I had accumulated on Facebook--literally give them a face. Purposefully individualizing each person felt like I was spending time with them, honoring them, reminiscing with them. But, after compiling each person's profile picture here within the same composition, the image begins to lose the individual faces for a webbed pattern of homogeneity and clutter. Although the final design becomes abstracted, the viewer can still make out patterns that are revealed through the repetition. The scale of this work activates a physicality that only happens IRL. This is the first time I made this work by hand on paper, though there are several iterations of digital drawings of the same subject matter.
