Untitled (Focus Your Attention on the Altar)

This illustration was designed to be repeated in a textile print. The drawings are loosely based on materials found on or around a Coptic altar. Traditionally, an ornately knitted apparatus holds a hollowed-out ostrich egg on the ceiling right in front of the altar in Orthodox churches. This is a charged symbol, as it's meant to remind worshipers to keep their eyes and attention focused on the Eastern altar opening during service. The story goes that as an expecting mother, female ostriches watch their eggs intensely, in order to protect their unborn children. This playful illustration on an article of clothing says, "Keep your attention on me, baby."
